An exploration into women of colour in the media.

‘Where’s my Representation?’ - 2020

As part of my A-Level art final piece

I conceptualised, directed, and produced a 3-minute short film that delves into the underrepresentation of women of colour within the film and creative industries. Drawing inspiration from the profound visual storytelling of Khalik Allah, the evocative narratives of Carrie Mae Weems, and the cinematic style of Trey Edward Shults' Waves (2019), I aimed to create a piece that not only highlights this critical issue but also resonates with audiences on a deeper emotional level.

In this film, I sought to blend visual poetry with raw, authentic storytelling, using a minimalist approach to both cinematography and dialogue. The narrative is driven soley by the women themselves as they talk freely sharing some of their experiences and perspectives as women of colour, shedding light on the barriers they face in an industry where their voices are often marginalised. This is further emphasised by being screened on a “wall” I created out of ceramic tiles that read “Where’s my representation?”.

Through this project, I wanted to challenge the status quo and contribute to the ongoing conversation about diversity and inclusion in the arts. This film represents a deeply personal exploration of identity, visibility, and the power of representation, all of which are crucial elements in my creative journey.
